Chapter Twelve

D didn’t usually have women stay over.

Typically ever. The only reason he could come up with for the aberration in his MO was that last night had been abnormal in almost every way possible.

It had been a night of nevers.

But he thought that when he did have someone stay over they would want to actually relax. So it was kind of a surprise when he woke to find Elise hastily yanking on her lace panties.

He was wrecked. They’d had sex again and she’d fallen asleep on top of him. He hadn’t gotten that itch to move, to extricate from her arms. Instead, he’d held her close, and after some contortions to get the condom off with a little leakage, he’d pulled her close and savored the weight of her on top of him.

Her corn-silk hair had stuck to his neck, and her breasts pillowed against his pecs as she snuffled in his ear. She didn’t snore exactly but a small chuff of breath against his skin tickled him.

“Give me a sec.” He had a sex hangover. He shoved to sitting and pressed his elbows on his knees and rubbed the heel of his hands on his eyeballs.

“What time is it?” she shrieked, hopping on one foot as she tried to pull on one of her pumps.

Ah, those pumps.

He patted his palm over his heart. “You are hot AF.”

“What?” She stood, all sleek long legs and ivory lace and shiny heels. Her pearls were still wrapped around her neck. Jesus she was like a prim and proper fantasy girl.

“Focus, D’Andre.”

Even her snippy tone was turning him on. D glanced at the clock. It was only five-thirty.

“It’s early.”

“Not early enough. I have to get home.” She stomped out to the living room and he followed. Buck naked. A full body flush started at her stomach and spread, pinkening her breasts and coloring her neck and face.

She was tugging her clothes on.

And then she froze.

Stood. Blushed even harder. “Oh dear Lord. How could I forget?” She slapped her palm to her forehead. “I need a ride.”

He hadn’t forgotten. “I know. Let me pull on some sweats and I’ll take you.”

“You don’t have to. If I could borrow a few dollars….”

Her attitude was becoming less funny. Was she ashamed of last night? He sure wasn’t. Although sleeping with her wasn’t advisable, it wasn’t the end of the world.

He gave her a look. On the football field, defensive linemen cowered beneath that glare. “I’ll take you.”

“Okay.” She straightened her dress. “Thank you,” she said softly.

Elise turned around and faced the dark morning of the Boston skyline while D got dressed. “It’s so minimalist,” she said glancing around his apartment. The clean lines and sleek furniture gave an impression of wide open space. “Of course, my house is filled with generations of furniture and the weight of expectations.”

She frowned. And when she didn’t say anything else, he thought maybe he’d misunderstood her comments about her family home. Because now he got the impression she disapproved of his space.
